Ok, I know that this is completely unrelated to anything Ducati or ridin' related. But I know that there are many here who ride machines that should have killed us in an instant many a times. I'd like to think that there is someone looking out for us for those who have faith.

My girlfriend (soon to be fiance) was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 18 to undergo a colon/large intestine removal. She had a condition known as Ulcerative Colitis which is exactly what sounds like: ulcers in the colon. Anyway, she had it removed on Dec. 18 and was released from the hospital on xmass day. However, she had to be readmitted on Dec 28 due to an unknown blockage somewhere in her small intestine, which was preventing fluid and food from passing through her system. They put her on an NG tube, which is a tube that runs through your nasal cavity, through your throat, and down to your stomach in an effort to deflate her bowells and hopefully free up the obstruction. She has been on this awfull and painfull therapy since Dec. 29 and has not eaten in 6 days. She is in extreme pain and discomfort, and if the Doc does not see improvements by tomorrow, she will have to be completely opened up, and the Doctors will have to run through all 36feet worth of her small intestine to hopefully find the blockage. This is a very difficult procedure with a 6-8week recovery. My request are to those who believe in a higher power/God and to pray for her during her difficult time. It was the reason that no-one on the forum heard from me, because I was with her for the entire time she was in the hospital. I wish I could be there for her now, but because we are not married, I couldn't miss anymore work, (I already had to take my only 1 week vacation for the year to be there for hear on her first surgery). So I implore anyone who prays to pray for her in her time of need. It is the only thing that can help her now.

Thank you, and God Bless.

I am not a religious man, but that doesn't mean I can't pray for your girlfriend's well being and speedy recovery.
I believe anyone can pray regardless of religious beliefs/backgrounds if our intentions are pure of heart...

Quick update,

She recovered the most last night! Her bowels deflated significantly from the NG therapy, and they are going to start her on "clear" diet tomorrow, after not eating for the last 8 days. She had the tube removed today, and right now, she does not require surgery. This is not to say that she may once her diet progresses, be required to go into surgery. But it is amazing to see the progress that was made last night, knowing of all those that were praying for her to get better. I thank you all from the bottom of my hear and humbly ask for you all to continue to pray for a full and speedy recovery for my girl.

Thank you and God Bless,

we'll be anxious to see how a slow and methodical diet advancement is tolerated by her recovering (from the shock of the large intestine removal) small bowel

our continued prayers will be forthcoming

Again, thank you all so very much and from the bottom of my heart the prayers that you have said for her. I promise you all that it truly has helped, and she is in the best position yet because of all of those praying and watching out for her. I am indebted to you all, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

The power of prayer is EXTREMELY STRONG CAVEMAN. Tell her to trust in GOD, and believe that she is already healed. Remember these scriptures:

Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

1 Thessalonians 5: 17 "Pray without ceasing."

I will surely keep her in my prayers.

Hey ya'll! I am emailing you all from China of all places! I flew out Saturday morning from ATL, and I gave my girl one last call before I got on the airplane to see if she started her "liquid" diet. I heard some bad news in that she had a very rough and painfull friday night, and that she was "distended" meaning her bowels were again bloated. They put off the liquid diet through saturday. I called her 12 hours ago to see how she was doing. The distension went down slightly, but they said that she still wouldn't be on liquids. I will call her in about 10 hours to see if they put her on a liquid diet again.

FYI, it really sucks having to be sent overseas and not be able to keep in touch with loved ones in need. It makes it very hard to focus on anything, and know that it will be a minimum of a week before I can even talk to her on the phone for more than two minutes at a time. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. I'll try to keep you all posted, but it will be hard to be it I am moving all over this back asswards country!

Oh and thanks for the offer to help out Greg. If you know of a way to send and receive cell phone text messages via internet, or you know someone in the phone company that can give a break on the international rate charges, :) (can't call anyways on my company phone), that would help! I called while I was on the plane, which was a BIG MISTAKE, because it cost over 15$/minute! My 5 minute phone call cost me almost 80$'s!

Sorry I haven't kept you all posted the last few days. I have been hopping around China, and didn't have any time to get on the net'.

I landed in Atlanta last night at 9 pm and got in my car and drove down to the hospital in Ft. Lauderdale as soon as I got to my car. I had already been traveling for the last 24 hours straight, but exhaustion did not set, caus' I was hell bent on getting down to south florida to see "Katie". I found out through an email that the doctors had to rush her into the second surgery last wednesday night.

Well she made it through surgery, the doctors removed scar tissue on her intestines to hopefully free up the blockage causing fluid/food to not pass through her system. When I saw her this morning at 6:00am est, she looked pretty banged up, the doctors sure did a number on her stomach. But her spirits were definitely lifted when I surprised her, and she as well as the doctors are very hopeful for a full, yet very long, recovery.

Thanks for everyone's support and prayers. You have no idea how much I and her appreciate it. This forum kind of feels like family now, which is testament to how great the people are here!

Thank You all for everything!

I have to admit, I am really bothered by what happened to Katie. When I saw her yesterday, she really looked awful. She is going to be in recovery for at least 5 weeks.

The doctor removed scar tissue from her small intestines which were causing "bowel loops", caused by the first surgery.

The thing is, the scar tissue was caused by the laproscopic surgery on the "first go around". The Doctor said that the first surgery would take 5-7 hours. He did it in less than 4, and of most relevance, he was leaving for his xmass vacation right after the surgery. Now don't get me wrong, this guy is world reknowned, but I think that he rushed through her surgery, and in the process, he was not as careful as he usually is, and whilst moving her intestines and everything around, he created damage. She is in the 1% catagory for needing additional surgery after the "j-pouch" procedure for ulcerative colitis/colon removal. Yet she is very young and was in absolutely great shape. She was the best candidate for this procedure, and she should not be in the "1 %" catagory.

I am just really struggling with knowing how she is doing right now. She looks and feels awful. She still hasn't eaten in 18 days, and she has a really long road ahead of her. I hate not being able to help her being almost 700 miles away from her.

Just pray for comfort for her if you all can....please.

i can fully appreciate how you feel
it's hard to be 1/2 way around the world.... and come home to this SHOCK TO YOUR SYSTEM

i surely hope that there was no "RUSH" in his surgery to make some VACATION DEADLINE

what katie is facing... is the toughest thing in the world

the surgery will give her the best chance of leading a normal life without the fear of adenocarcinoma (cancer) of the large intestine secondary to 10+ years of Ulcerative Colitis

i wish you lived closer...
i'd be there tonight
i'm so sorry that katie has to go through this...
and that YOU have to witness it

you are the greatest guy in the world to stand by her....
no everyone would do that, of course

Katie is starting to do better. They have removed the catheter and the "NG tube", so her quality of life is much better.

She is still not allowed to drink or eat anything which brings the total days that she has not eaten or drank anything to 20! I would go insane if I couldn't eat or drink for that long! But I am also the Caveman, and the Caveman must eat :).

Oh and your comment on life 100 years ago, the average male in the USA lived to 46. If I were average I'd be in the grave. Our health is the most important thing to having a quality life.

Update: As of January 22,

Katie has not progressed since having having the NG tube removed from her 6 days ago. She continues to suffer from naseau, and for this reason, the doctors are still against her going on a clear liquid diet. She continues to receive her nutrients via an IV. I have not been able to talk to her since saturday, because it hurts her too much to talk. I have only been able to talk to her mother, and she is now keeping me posted.

The doctors can't give a definitive answer as to why she is experiencing the severe naseau. They are continuing to try out different medications, but I have a feeling that the constant "cocktails" being served to her are the reason for the naseau, that and the fact that she is yet to eat anything of substance in the last 25 days. But I am no doctor and I am purely speculating.

The good news is the swelling in her appendages has gone down, but her stomache is still pretty swollen. I am hoping and praying that she will start to get better and get out of this crappy plateau that she has found herself in. But I and her family are trying to remain positive.

Thank you all for all of your continued thoughts and prayers.

News are not has good as i think we all hoped.

first of all..... i am SO sorry for her lack of progress
the swelling in her arms and legs is undoubtedly due to her lack of protein...
TPN..... the "food" given IV canNOT provide the same level of protein-based calories that P.O. food (that by mouth) can.....
so, she get protein malnutrition, which causes
edema of the limbs
and ascites.... fluid build-up in the abdomen

i am so sorry that you are far away and cannot be with her
i'm happy that her mom continues to keep you informed.... but, not talking to each other is nearly impossible to take
a million praises to you for tolerating that

i'm ever appreciative for these updates
i wish that she were in a hospital in my town so that i could look after her for you, as well

When my mom was undergoing chemo, she was taking this incredible medicine to help aliviate the nausea. I don't know the name of it. This stuff was expensive as hell, $40 a pill! No chit. It was worth it however, cause this stuff was almost magic. The pill disolved right on the tongue, no need to swallow and the effect was nearly instantaneous. Wonder if something like that can help Katie, but I'm sure her doctors know what's best for her.

We're still thinking of Katie and you, Sloan, and are hoping for a complete and quick recovery.

i'm sure that medicine was ZOFRAN
http://www.zofran.com/
and i'm sure they've already tried it

stopping nausea from chemo is one thing
but, stopping nausea after having a great section of your large intestine removed... and the increased PERISTALSIS of the remaining bowel that results is a whole other situation

i'm sure they've tried zofran
it is the GOLD STANDARD of nausea treatment in 2007

I did check on it, and it is what she is receiving. She and her family have been getting the "run around" from the various doctors seeing her. They don't know what is causing the nausea...one physician's assistant said that the pain medication could be causing it, but this coming from a physician's assistant, and Katie has been on morphine all along, and the nausea didn't set in till about two days ago; therefore, I question the validity in the Physician's Assistant's comment. Wish I new what was causing this nausea.

They are going to perform an "endoscopy" tomorrow. It sounds like a simply procedure where they send a camera down your throat to check out what's going on inside. Sorry for sounding so uneducated about it, but I don't know exactly what they do or where they will be looking around. All they'd have to say to me would be "we are going to send a camera down your throat and look around"; I would get it.

I'll let you all know how the procedure goes after I hear from her family.

As always, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Sloan,
they will use an endoscope

http://www.uab.edu/images/uabmagazine/fall97/endoscope12a.jpg

to look down the esophagus, into the stomach and then out of the pyloris into the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine)

they will look for anything abnormal that might be causing nausea
such as....
lesions (or abnormal "sores") on the wall of the esophagus (food pipe), stomach, or small intestine

the might also check the ampulla of vater
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatopancreatic_ampulla

to make sure that the opening to the liver and pancreas and gall bladder are as they should be as well

Sorry its been awhile since I have kept you all updated. Katie, her family, and I were going back and forth from bad news good news. There were a few "scares", but now that some time has passed, and more tests/ CT scans, etc; the doctors seem to be getting her ready to do the remainder of her recovery at home! I don't know when she is scheduled to go home, but they are making it sound like it will be very soon!

There still are a lot of concerns that the doctors have, but I do not want to go into them. The fact that they are prepping her to go home soon and have nurses come by for her nutrients and medications is an overwhelmingly welcoming! Part of the reason for the release is that her home is literally only 1.5 miles away from the Cleveland Clinic (her hospital)! So if anything were to go wrong, it would be very easy to get her there.

Either way, I am so happy to hear that she'll be going home soon. I like thinking that your all's thoughts had prayers have helped her to get through what she has gotten through so far, and that she will have the strength to get through the remainder of her recover and complications if they are to arise.

Thank you all for everything; I, Katie, and her family are indebted to all those who kept her in your thoughts and prayers!

She'll still be 1.5 miles from the hospital, and a nurse will come to give her meds and her nutrition IV bag, but the fact that they are preparing for her to go home tomorrow is the greatest news I have ever heard!

Just think of those who are in a hospital right now. I hate to be negative, but if you think about it, the fact that you have your health makes you so fortunate! Rewind the clock 100 years, and at minimum, half of us wouldn't be here due to illness, infections, virus', etc. It took me seeing my girl at her worst to realize how fortunate I really am.

Sloan

I'm a newbie but my thoughts and prayers are with you and your girl. Your statement on health is right on. My saying is 'if you have your health you have everything'. I've got three kids, my oldest Amanda was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 11, my life turned upside down in an instant. She beat it (I hope) with a lot of lasting residual effects, but the important part is I still have her! My 13 yr. old boy was diagnosed with UC last year, infact going into the hospital today for a 5 hr. steroid drip. His case certainly doesn't seem as severe as Katie's though, hope it stays that way. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you both - best of luck.

Well, I just got back in town from seeing her over the weekend through Monday. She looked great! She was moving around the house a little and managed to put a few bites of food down each day. She is so small right now, which I didn't think was possible!

Now for the bad news, she started complaining of body aches and an abnormally high body temp. This morning, I found out that she was readmitted to the hospital again. She had a 103 degree fever and the nausea had set back in. They are running all sorts of tests and I hope to hear something back later tonight. It could be something as simple as the Flu, which I hope. Or it can be an infected "pic line" which is giving her nutrients or something else.

I hate to hear that she is back in the hospital, but I am very hopeful that it is something that will resolve itself. After seeing her how she was this weekend, I know that she is strong enough to get through this complication, as she has already gotten through other and at times very severe complications.

I'll keep you all posted when I find out anything new and again thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Update,

Katie has had a 102 to 105 degree fever since monday. An infectious deseases doctor met with her today; her blood/bacteria cultures have not fully developed as of yet for the doctors to make a determination as to what type of infection she has.

She had an asthma attack last night from the anxiety, the doctors took awhile to get her her nebulizer. They have given her ativan to help with the anxiety.

Tomorrow, they are doing some cardiology tests see if she hasn't had any heart damage occur from the days of high body temperature, and she had a heart murmur surgically corrected when she was an infant. Truth is, I barely know what is going on at this time. This is all kind of hard to contemplate and comprehend.

I'll try to keep you all posted as has been requested, but I am starting to get a little exhausted from it and feel like I am almost burdening you all about the incessant "complications" that she continues to have. I am going to fly down again to see her this weekend to give her some support. Please forgive me if I don't continue to keep updating you all or if you all don't hear from me.

Sloan....
you only need to feel that you are burdening US.... if it is an IMPOSITION for YOU to tell us all about Katie's current situation

we are family....
and we want to know what's going on.... but, only if YOU want to keep us filled in

needless to say, Katie's course is one of the most circuitous and arduous i can ever remember in the treament of Ulcerative Colitis.

it is important to remember that Katie and her family made the ONLY decision they could... to remove her LARGE intestine... as it would DEFINITELY become cancerous before her 30th birthday... as in all folks with more than 10 years of Ulcerative Colitis.

i know that this is more difficult that anyone here can possible imagine.... whether they've dealt with personal chronic illness or not.

she is your fiancee....
she hasn't been well for weeks
she is 650 miles from you

her family must be barely making it, emotionally... at this point

they've been dealing with this UC.... for years before you even knew her, of course

be there for them
be there for her....
but,
most of all,
be there for yourself.... please

Thank you all for everything again. Please understand, that I am just having trouble not being able to tell you all better news. Going from going home to going back to the hospital is just tough. It was an obvious relief when she was sent home. But the fact that she had to go back, is just tough. Its not that I "can't" keep you all posted, I just want people to start hearing better news. Going from good news to bad, and then continuing to update you all on the bad makes it difficult to want to continue to let you all know about the bad.

This is a forum about something great coming in to peoples lives (1098), I just hope that I am not spoiling it for some by being the guy that tells everyone about his "poor girlfriend" (she is not my fiance yet, but that is the direction) and how she isn't getting better. In truth, i am the "bearer of bad news" it seems like. I know that there are those that really do care for her and my position that are on this forum, but its been dificult to make everything so "public" to those who probably don't really care 2 cents who I am or who Katie is. Its because of this that I feel that I may be doing a disservice to Katie.

Honestly, its hard to think what I should think. Too much is running through my head to be able to put it clearly into words.

I do have faith that she'll make it...eventually I pray. And I do thank you all for your all's thoughts, prayers, and support. It is what has really kept me around on this forum.

Sloan you are not spoiling anything by telling us about Katie.

Just keep supporting her like you are now. :)

And update us when you can, we are behind you both.
