Last night I was watching "Dogfights" on the History Channel (I am a huge WWII aviation buff) and began to think of the similarities of pilots vs motorcyclists. We are both religious on our "Pre flight" rituals and focus extreme amounts of time in learning our crafts. ie... picking the proper lines, extracting the most out of our steeds, etc. I was wondering if anyone else on the board was an aviation buff. I am of the Pre Jet age variety, I think jets are cool but nothing can replace the sound of a P-51 flying overhead with its Merlin singing at full song:cool Here is a list of my favorites of all time

1. Lockheed P-38J Lightning
2. Supermarine Spitfire MK VII
3. Vought F4U Corsair
4. North American P-51 Mustang
5. Grumman F6 Hellcat

Also the History Channel has some good programs if your into Aviation. The "Search for the Lost Squadron" is an awsome documentry on P-38 Lightnings!!

I just saw the preview for that on the History Channel today and it had a F86 Sabre and a Mig-15 dog fighting. I was actually watching todays episodes of the Battle in Leyte gulf, the Christmas Truce, a Sherman tank restoration and a documentary on Benjamin Franklin! :biggrin

I love WWII history and 1940's era! My favorite WWII plane has to be the Boeing B17 Flying Fortress.

Good episodes. I like how the History channel has animated the dogfighting sequences. It adds a nice visual to what was actually going on. And the animated sequences are pretty awesome also.

My favorite Helicopter is definitely the Bell AH-1J SuperCobra :badgerslayer

I graduated with a degree in Aerospace engineering, emphasis on propulsion, specifically piston engines.

Any guess which way I voted?

Any more guesses on why it took me two years to find a job? :duh So maybe it wasn't the most marketable combination...

It might not have been the most "Marketable" but with all of the restoration projects going on Im sure it could be one of the most interesting! I couldnt imagine being in on the restorartion of an original P-38, 40 , 51...etc. Must be amazing!

So I bet you have an answer to the infamous propulsion question:

If a plane was set on a moving treadmill, would it fly? :inc

Yeah, I thought it was another WWII pc game...

I dunno, but there's something I find very intriguing about WWII. The world was in such chaos during that time and hearing the stories from those who lived through it is so amazing.

My mothers cousin was in the war. He was a translater in Italy where he met his wife Anna. Both have passed on but the stories he told me were inspiring, it seemed that everyone was fighting for a common cause then. Even with all of the chaos things were more clear cut and defined .... It makes me wonder where we are heading as a civilization. Kind of scary

Thats awesome. Speaking of which my mom was born in Eastern Samar, Phillipines Islands in 1943 which is the island north of Leyte Gulf. My grandfather was the mayor of a town call Borongan around the time the war in the Pacific was occurring and actually got to meet General Douglas MacArthur, shake his hand, the whole nine yards. I remember when I was younger, he was always tell us stories of the never ending gunfire, the flak in the air, the Japanese, the POW's everything. I just remember the pictures and the amount of detail he would give, it was almost surreal.

OMG!

That question was on a Ferrari forum I used to surf, and it went on for like 70 pages! Dumbest damn thing ever - if you took the question one way it was trivial - yes it would fly. if you took it another way it was physically impossible to meet the conditions so the question wasn't valid... yet people argued about it forever...

BTW - yeah, it would fly. :p

Cool thread by the way. I like WW2 history, I guess because my dad is a big history buff. I recently went to the AF museum, got to see a lot of cool WW2 machinery.

I don't even want to start again but yes it was also on both the R1/ R6, bimmer and surfing forums that I visited. I lost count of how many pages there were but mods had to step in a couple times b/c too many people kept trying to have pissing matches. :duh

Cool pics Phil! :)
