Hey people,
I have translated the 1098 launch conference from italian... due to my lack of in depth technical knowledge, and the fact that I was translating and typing as I was listening, some sentences may not be as clear as you'd like. ask if you need clarifications and I'll go back and listen to parts again. The vid. cut out while speaker was talking about exup-type valve. Enjoy:

Alex.

bulletpoint #1
classic italian repetition: basically he says about 4 times how they wanted a bike, which could perform on the track at the max, but with suspension and setup that gave pleasure on a winding empty road going much slower... (interesting how the show the bike fully bent over while he says that... very ironic)

...in that vein he mentions lightweight with very powerful torque... but also a bike that 'in those precious few minutes of available road' could be really revved out to enjoy the potential of the bike...

bulletpoint #2
engine: they debated how much power it needed, 120/140/150/160... his personal idea is that horsepower is like money, you can never have too much... but the essence is always controlling it to not get into trouble... soooo, he wanted an engine that could have smooth power as well as high top end power. (gets interesting here). He says "i challenge you to find any roadbike with 80kg of torque, 160hp, and this low weight... this is when we stop chatting, and move to action. when you put your leathers on.... you will truly feel what this really means."

the engine is the result of 5kg weightloss... it must contribute to lightening of bike. we looked at maintenance interval increase by 25% over the life of the bike, as well as reduced actual costs, we see a 50% decrease in maintenance costs over the life of the bike. Also, if you look at the head of this engine, it is absolutely identical to the gp7 head. specifically, the potential of the new engine, the new desmo system allows much higher rpms. the new head benefits from gp7 airflow studies, and this engine allows for much greater airflow, thereby allowing much higher rpm. the electronics are also more sophisticated. the lightening of the cams and desmo valves also allows for much less stressed components at higher rpms.... if you think of the gp7 heads which can reach 20k rpm... we want to show how applying the same heads to this bike at 12k rpm... you will see how comfortable this engine will be at high rpms.

bulletpoint #3
why oval valves?... if you think about an engine from the top, and you look at a 4 valve head (like the desmosedici)... and you let the valves melt into each other... you will see that the perfect compromise for a 2-valve engine is a valve which has an oval shape. So why doesn't everyone have this you ask? because it's very difficult... but from our experience in gp7, we felt like we now had the technology to put this into producation

bulletpoint #4
exhaust... we needed an exhaust that wouldn't choke the engine. we would want ideally an open exhaust... a perfect 2 into 1 into 2... we looked in maniacal fashion we looked at reducing the total weight of the exhaust. we reduced weight here by 2.7kg, which if you consider that it is now a euro 4 exhaust, not euro 2... is a huge achievement.... (video finished here while he was mentioning exup type valve.)

I think some of us have noticed how corners might have been cut to save costs in different areas of the 1098 (non adjustability of rearsets/tank/seat etc.) But on the other hand I really enjoyed hearing about how money was spent to really increase handling/performance. Best example for me is how even the engine was to have 2 roles: power as well as weight loss. It really makes me feel that aside from looks, this is going to be a rockstar of a bike... no more having to make excuses for duc's performance I think.

well,
we knew they had to save some money somewhere
and..... it's so much fun spending money on these bikes AFTER the sale, anyway :beer

I too watched the video but I could not translate it on the fly as well as Afborroni. Interesting what he had to say about the development of the bike. Thanks for the link.
